Record Review: Miles Kurosky – The Desert of Shallow Effects

By Alex Brenner

When Beulah broke up in 2005 it just seemed plain unfair. After eight years, four amazing records and even a film, A Good Band is Easy to Kill, documenting their final tour, it was all over. Out of all the Elephant 6 bands no one really understood pop music better than Miles Kurosky. Six years later this album is what die hard Beulah fans have been waiting for. Desert basically picks up where Beulah left off and maybe it sounds that way because some of them play on the record. Miles’ lyrics and sharp melodies have not lost their edge one bit; he sounds like a reenergized pop machine.

Two songs really stick out here; “Apple for an Apple” and” I Can’t Swim” are the stellar moments fans have been swooning about for years. I have not heard such biting pop since Beluah‘s 1997 masterpiece Handsome Western States. Miles is in top form here. The album sounds raw but still very orchestral. There are not really any memorable lyrics like “I’ll fight if you want me to fight” but nonetheless Miles still has that clever wit we’ve come to love.

The Desert Of Shallow Effects is if anything a return to form rather than a step back. Sure, you kind of have to be a longtime fan to really appreciate it but there is not a bad song on here. I honestly hope Miles gains some new fans. Beulah was one of the greatest indie pop bands of all time, so there is a certain amount of respect due here.

My only complaint if you could call it that is the record is too short. Ten songs are not enough considering the six year absence so I have to play the record over and over. Definitely check this record out.
