This is a short list because despite the moniker – Extended Play – EPs are usually those releases that are shorter than LPs (anybody know what that stands for?). Really though, in the modern day the EP is the vehicle of the unsigned or unrecognized band. That isn’t to say that they are the only ones who drop an EP. There were plenty of quality EPs that came out this year by well established, or at least well known, acts. However, for this list we prefer to emphasize emerging acts. We’re going to focus this short list on local artists deserving of the $5 that an EP usually gets at the merch table in the back of the Drunken Unicorn.
Today the Moon, Tomorrow the Sun – Heavyweight Champions
MP3: Today the Moon Tomorrow the Sun – The Atlantan
Tealights – Take Us by Sea
Swing Set – The Great Shakes E.P.
Finally, I (Rube) want to put Alex Brenner’s project on here too. He didn’t put me up to it – this is all me. It was the second record review we ever posted at Atlanta’s A-List and we did it because we loved it. I think copies are still in stock at Decatur CD. Get one when you come by to visit us on Wednesday night for The Dutchess and The Duke in-store show.
MP3: Swing Set – Can’t Stop Remembering You
And while we’re doin’ the EP bit let’s add our favorite of 2008. This band is not local, out of Charleston we think, but well deserving of the attention.
All Get Out – The Spitting EP
MP3: All Get Out – Water and God
Okay, that’s all we’ve got. Told you it would be quick. Enjoy.
Still to come in the next few days – Alex’s Best Albums of 2009, Rube’s Best Albums of 2009, and a couple more lists (books, songs, shows maybe).
