It’s Fat Tuesday and we’re not in New Orleans, but you can get a little taste of the Big Easy tonight at Criminal Records. It’s a listening party to celebrate the release of a new record to benefit the historic Preservation Hall.
All proceeds from the sale of the album go to Preservation Hall and the Music Outreach program in New Orleans. The record is simply titled Preservation and features new recordings from notables like Tom Waits, Andrew Bird, Del McCoury, and Steve Earle. A highlight of the record that has gotten some advance attention is a new version of Rocking Chair, featuring the vocals of Louis Armstrong over the sounds of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. The creation of the track was covered by NPR’s Sunday Edition and you can hear the song there (along with the Tom Waits track too).
No, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band will not be at Criminal Records, but Blair Crimmins & The Hookers will be playing at 7:00 to kick things off. There will be doughnuts (maybe even beignets?) and beer courtesy of Sublime Doughnuts and Magic Hat Brewery. Sounds like a good way to ease into your Mardi Gras celebration.
