Jack White, now nearly famous for just being famous, took a moment away from his many bands (White Stripes, Raconteurs, Dead Weather) and other projects to spend a little time in the classroom. No, there is nothing for Mr. White to learn. After all, he has already become the paradigm for the modern indie rock star. This time, Mr. White has returned to the schoolhouse as a teacher.
Those guys in Chicago report that Mr. White recently delivered a lecture to a class of collegians at Dublin, Ireland’s Trinity College. Displaying a keen understanding of the criteria for academic renown – be controversial, not credible – Jack decided to tell the intrepid young students that Britney Spears was more authentic than Bob Dylan…right.
Sorry gents, but in the ivory tower that’s not “open minded” that’s cliché - attack the establishment, suggest the unexpected. It does get you headlines though.
We still love the patron saint of indie-tinged blues-rock, but we may be a bit sceptical of his efforts to style a second career as an academe.
