There are lots of options for helping the tens of thousands of people in Haiti whose lives are in shambles. Our personal experience visiting the island of Hispanola would lead us to believe that many Haitians had a tough row even before this disaster. In the wake of devastation, the situation is almost inconceivable. We just wanted to take a moment to share a couple options local, and otherwise, where you can help and get a little something in return.
Local restuaranteurs Apres Diem group, which includes Apres Diem (Midtown), Carpe Diem (Decatur), Carroll Street Cafe and Vilage Pizza (both Cabbagetown) are dontating a portion of the proceeds from meals purchased tomorrow, Tuesday, January 26, to Doctors without Borders to help support Haiti relief. Our own Paste Magazine has launched Songs For Haiti which gives you access to mp3s from more than 200 artists for a donation. One hundred percent of those donations will go to Doctors without Borders, the Red Cross and Wyclef Jean’s Yele Haiti Earthquake Fund. Click here for Songs for Haiti.
One of our favorite bands, Wilco, is on board too. They have posted two complete live shows for download and only ask for a donation of $15 to Doctors without Borders or OXFAM in return. It appears that the downloads don’t require that you donate first, so do the right thing and donate at least $1 if you’re going to take advantage of the music. The Wilco option is here.
