Day Jobs: A Fight To The Death

By Matt Jarrard

This is the first of a multi-part series profiling local musicians, and their day jobs. I always find myself at concerts thinking: “Hmmmm…I wonder what he/she does from 9-5?” So, I’m going to start asking that question… and so far the answers have been pretty interesting. If there’s anyone you’d like for me to ask, be sure to let me know….and I’ll go ask them!

What’s your day job?

Digital Campaign Manager at Turner Media Group (Turner Broadcasting)

Oh really…so what is it that you ACTUALLY do?

Our department plans all of the advertising media for all Turner network programming (CNN, Cartoon Network, AdultSwim, TNT, TBS, etc), and it is my job to make sure all of the digital elements of our campaigns display and function correctly. I coordinate with the creative teams, online publishers, and the networks to gather creative assets and get them implemented in the appropriate places. My God, that sounds boring now that I’ve typed it out.

What’s your favorite part about your day job?

I really dig the flexibility; I’ve established enough credibility at this point that I can set my own hours (within reason of course), work from home a decent amount, and work in my own way without anyone questioning my work ethic. That’s pretty cool for such a huge corporation.

Least favorite?

The fact that it is not very creative. Although, this is a mixed blessing because once I leave the office each day I still have creative energy to apply to music. Long term however, I would love to be able to meld my love of music with my desire to eat and not be homeless.

Would you quit if you could afford to?

Bet your ass I would. I really don’t mind my job so far as corporate gigs go, but I dream of having nothing to do all day but write, record, and perform music.
