UPDATE: Atlanta Book Clubs in January

By Yankee Rose

This time of year I am always frustrated as my reading time deceases, my time spent on BarnesAndNoble.com in my bathrobe at 2 AM increases, and my book club perfect attendance falls to ruin.  Not to spoil Christmas for my friends and loved ones, but yes, you are getting books.  Each and every one of you.

As I prepare to spend the week between Christmas and New Year’s making up for my sorry reading list thusfar this month, I have many book club selections I plan on conquering.   While I often miss some of the book clubs we list here (cut me a break, three meet on the same night — and one is men only!), I usually still pick up the book and give it a shot.  Besides the socialization and intellectual discussion one may gleam from actually attending book club, there is the recommendation of a book that someone liked enough to share.  While they didn’t make the cut for Alex’s post on discovering new music, book clubs are one of my favorite ways to discover to new books.  Here are some of the great books Atlantan’s are reading for book club in January:

Bel Canto, by Ann Patchett, The Catch-All Book Club, hosted by Little Shop of Stories on January 11th, at 7PM.

Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, by Mark Haddon, Pub Fiction, hosted by DeKalb County Public Library meeting at Karavana on January 21st at 7PM.

Looking For Salvation at the Dairy Queen, by Susan Gregg Gilmore,  Monthly book Club, hosted by Bound to Be Read Books on January 21st at 7PM.

Snowcrash, by Neal Stephenson, Guys Who Read, hosted by Little Shop of Stories meeting at The Brick Store on January 21st at 7PM.

The Filth, by Grant Morrison, Graphic Novel Club, meeting in Decatur at Raging Burrito  on January 25th at 7 PM.

My Stroke of Insight: A Brain Scientist’s Personal Journey, by Jill Bolte Taylor, Decatur Library Book Club, meeting at Decatur Public Library on January 27 at 7PM.

As always, if you want to grab any one of these titles, please consider your local independent bookstore first.  If you know a good book club we don’t mention, please let us know!
