Old Sounds, New Music: Sharon Jones and Jimi Hendrix

Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings are unabashedly old school and they do it exceptionally well. It’s soul with horns and tempo and hurt and sometimes a little humor too. If you haven’t heard them before check out their great record, 100 Days, 100 Nights. We missed their sold out show at Variety Playhouse a couple of years ago, but we can redeem ourselves because they will be at Atlanta’s Center Stage on May 13.

Their fourth full length on Daptone Records, I Learned the Hard Way, will be available on April 6. This is the new song from that release.

Despite the fact that about one bazillion Jimi Hendrix records have been released since his untimely death in 1970, a new “lost record” has been discovered and will be released on March 9. It’s called Valleys of Neptune and it features the Band of Gypsys line-up of the Hendrix trio not the original Experience line-up.

In what might be a surprise to some, you can catch Experience Hendrix live at the Fabulous Fox Theatre on March 27 with a line-up featuring Billy Cox (Band of Gypsys) and including Joe Satriani, Jonny Lang, Eric Johnson, Susan Tedesci, and Brad Whitford of Aerosmith – all of whom presumable will take turns filling in for the legend himself. This is video for the title track to Valleys of Neptune.
