If there is a trinity of great writers from South Carolina, Pat Conroy certainly must be among them. Lords of Discipline and Prince of Tides may be best known by their movies adaptations but they stand out as novels first. The institutions at the center of those two novels, The Citadel and the Outer Banks, are cultural columns of our region. And for my money, no contemporary writer brings authenticity to those Southern institutions quite like Mr. Conroy. You don’t need a Palmetto tree decal on the back of your Yukon to get it.
He will be at the Day Chapel of the Carter Center on Wednesday, August 19 at 7:00. Tickets are $30 but you get a pre-signed copy of his latest book (South of Broad), so that’s not such a bad deal. It’s not often that you have a chance to see and listen to a legitimate leading light of modern literature.
Look for South of Broad and Mr. Conroy’s earlier works at the local independent book store nearest you. Some of our favorites are listed to the left under A-List Atlanta.
