New music doesn’t have to be released in the last minute to be new. Sometimes the best new music is simply music that you have never heard before. Not everybody can work in a record store and listen to music all day (if only because there sadly are too few record stores left). Even if we could, there would always be some band that we would never get around to or just plain miss. Then there are the thousands of bands who got one shot on a little label or put out there own record that nobody got to hear or cut a record that never really got released anywhere. (If you think you might like something like that check out Willfully Obscure).
This band with the spooky name falls somewhere in that mix. Not to be confused with the metal band of the same name that appeared in the 80s, Death was a trio of brothers (biologically and colloquially) from Detroit. This record, For the Whole World to See, was originally recorded in 1974 in the midst of the punk scene that fostered Iggy and the Stooges. Drag City recently “reissued” it and it is well worth checking out.
Fans of that era when garage started to morph into punk will find it well worth their time. I can’t stop listening to it. Personal highlights are “Politicians in My Eyes” and “Rock N Roll Victim.”
The band – minus one brother who passed in 2000 – have recently reunited and started playing shows again.
