We were having an A-List staff meeting last night, which according to tradition happens ad hoc in the fine haze of Alex’s cigarettes and my Sweetwater 420 pints on the back patio of Eddie’s Attic. One of the topics that came up was who gets to cover our most anticipated releases of the coming year. Alex already bid on and won Spoon (and that review will be up within the next day or two). I called Drive-By Truckers. We went through a few others too, like The Whigs and Ted Leo.
Little did I know that I didn’t need to waste that vote (and could have had Ted Leo). If I had been paying a little more attention in my daily surfing, I could have scooped Alex and almost everybody else on the interwebs with new music from Patterson and the band.
How you say? Well, I’ve developed the habit of visiting a great little site out of Athens called Southern Shelter which has assembled a great collection of live recordings by local and national acts. Some time last week, I dropped in and saw that there was a recent DBT show from the 40 Watt up. I thought to myself, I gotta go back and listen to that one. I didn’t even take the time to look at the set list. If I had, I might have noticed that I didn’t recognize the names of the first two tracks from the third show of a three night set that happened last week at the 40 Watt. I did notice tonight though, after seeing that other folks leaked the new single from Drive-By Truckers forthcoming full-length on ATO – The Big To-Do.
Okay, that was way too long of a lead-in. This is just one new track from The Big To-Do. There’s lots more at Southern Shelter. Before you listen though, please visit and support Nuci’s Space. It’s what SS and DBT would want you to do.
