We’re returning to our origins. If you’ve been plodding along with the blog since the beginning more than two years ago you know that it has gone through some changes. Please expect that it will continue to do so. One thing we abandoned was the “week of” feature. We gave up on it when we tried to become something that we’re really not – a full service music blog. There are plenty of folks out there who do it better than us, locally and otherwise. If you want to check some of them out keep your eyes peeled for our new link list which will only be comprised of blogs we look at or think you need to look at. Sorry folks, time to return to the critical filter.
What do we mean by that – the critical filter? Not much really. We’re not going to engage in the “Death of Paste” debate (though we do think Davy is winning) nor do we really think that we are your best source for critical music analysis (though we might be better than some).
No, the critical filter is much simpler than that. We’re going to post what we like. It’s that simple, if you like it too then good for you. If you don’t, well then check out some of those links that we mentioned above. One of them might work for you. And if it doesn’t work then somebody in Mountain View Cal can probably help you find what you need.
While we’re returning to our roots, we will still keep some of the things that brought many of you to the site in the first place. There will be more reviews by Alex and Eric and more posts from Matt too. Each will cover what they want, for whatever reason they want. No rules. Hipsters beware – we are not afraid.
If you never saw one of those first year posts, then this seemingly drunken discursive style is a bit new for you. Welcome to our nightmare. We’re also back to highlighting the shows we want to see this week and with that let’s get to it.
The week is perfectly frontloaded. Sunday night at the EARL is Laura Veirs. This is a non-smoking show but the music will be smoky and folk tinged. Laura has been making great records for some time. We still haven’t had a chance to listen to the entire body of work that is her latest – July Flame – but still like to take a pleasant spin with her 2007 effort, Saltbreakers
. She will be joined by the Watson Twins.
Monday night we will finally get to celebrate the arrival of New Jersey’s finest – Titus Andronicus. They had to cancel their show at the 529 earlier this year when their van broke down in Chapel Hill and we’ve been waiting for them to get back ever since. We still think The Monitor is one of the finest albums of the year and may very well end up at the top of our year-end list. They will be joined by one of Alex’s Philadelphia favorites – Free Energy.
Finally, we’re going to wrap up the week early with a third show on Tuesday night at the Variety Playhouse. We don’t know a blessed thing about the experimental French duo called CocoRosie (as if that has ever stopped us before) but we want to catch this show because it the first time you will be able to see Atlanta’s hottest buzz band, Oryx & Crake, on the big stage at the Variety. They are riding high since the August release of their debut LP and we think this appearance is not yet the crest of that wave.
Check in next week to see if we make good on our promise to deliver one rambling quasi relevant post per week…
