Up and Running
Sometimes I just sit down and just don’t have much to say. (Really it does happen). If there was a week where that was apropos, I suppose this is it. It’s early in the year. Things haven’t even gotten started yet, but don’t despair. We’re just days (actually 21 days, 9 hours, 12 minutes) from Groundhog’s Day which marks just six more weeks of winter. And after winter is spring and that’s when flowers bloom, birds sing, and the green grass grows. And summer is right after that and that is when bands go on tour. So really we’ve got nothing to worry about, A-List happiness is right around the corner.
In the meantime, the A-List does have something to give away. It’s a little outside the scope of our typical A-List stuff but as the give away part above indicated, it is FREE. Atlanta’s A-List has 1 pass for two (one plus a guest) to the advance screening of Showtime’s new series United States of Tara. Apparently it’s a comedy from Steven Spielberg and the main character has dissociative identity disorder (that’s therapist for multiple personalities). The show is at 7:00 on Tuesday night at Midtown Art Cinema. No tricks, no gimmicks, this is free to the first A-Lister who asks for it.
One Stop Shopping
If you really need to scratch the live music itch, there is always somebody waiting to be discovered by you or me. If you’re a regular reader, you already know the venues – don’t be afraid to get out there. Keeping in mind that the A-List is a public service of sorts, I will mention two shows this coming weekend – both at Smith’s Olde Bar.
The first is Saturday night. New Orleans’ own Dirty Dozen Brass Band will be making a stop upstairs at Smith’s. I don’t have any hard facts on this but it seems that they make a stop here at least once a year if not every several months. If you like classic New Orleans jazz this will suit you well, but there is a little more to this band than that. They recently recorded their own interpretation of Marvin Gaye’s classic 1972 album, What’s Going On?. Their cover of the famous title track features Chuck D on vocals – which is about as far a departure from the original as I could have imagined. If you can find a beignet this side of Sandy Springs, then grab it and head down Piedmont to Monroe on Saturday night.
Sunday night Atlanta’s own Connor Christian & Southern Gothic will be making a stop at Smith’s. The self-described troubadour and poet’s latest record is 90 Proof Lullabies. If you like the “Gavin” sound (Degraw and Rossdale) and I know there are plenty who do, then this will entertain you for the evening.
Coming Soon to Dogwood City
Let me leave you with a couple of long term previews: Robert Earl Keen, Feb 14 at the Variety; Jason Isbell, Feb 18, at the Earl. I expect tickets won’t last for either of these.
That’s the A-List and all I want right now is a front row seat to hear ole Johnny sing.
