Willie Nelson Style
The A-List will be on the road again this week. Spending most of the week within shouting distance of a town known for slot machines (but not known for hosting Elvis), isn’t the best place for live music (or at least any I want to hear). Likewise, I don’t expect to find a book club or literary festival. That being said, getting excited about this week’s line-up just doesn’t seem that exciting (personally). But being in another town doesn’t stop Atlanta’s A-List from getting the word out, so here goes.
Tuesday night the Earl will be hosting Langhorne Slim and the War Eagles (no, he’s not from Auburn – or even Woodward). This Philly singer-songwriter plays in a style rooted in acoustic blues. Our own Paste Magazine ranked his 2008 self-titled LP among it Best of the Year. I don’t know if I would agree (having not listened to it) but if it resembles 2005′s When the Sun’s Gone Down then I guess I’m not too disappointed to be missing this show. I just don’t get the hype, but there you have both sides of it and maybe enough info to make your own decision. As for me, even New Jersey has its gems.
At the time of writing you can still may find tickets (craigslist?) for Thursday night’s sold out Neko Case show at Variety Playhouse, but the prices are high ($70) and supply thin (2). This one I am sad to be missing.
Breaking the Law
I am going to break several fundamental rules of the A-List for Friday and Saturday. First, you can head to Buckhead (there’s one) on April 2 to check out cover band (there’s two) Yacht Rock at Andrew’s Upstairs. Yes, the exceptions that allow me to sleep through the night after this double violation are that I sorta know somebody in the band and I think they play this 70s cheese (like Captain & Tennille and Robbie Dupree) as participants in their own less than cosmic, but bigger than private, practical joke.
Saturday night you can visit the place that thinks saving the planet has something to do with wall mounting Stratocasters in Plexiglas boxes – Hard Rock Cafe Atlanta (there’s three). I never really thought I would find myself suggesting that anybody not from Oklahoma venture into this place, but here I am doing it. Why? Well, my favorite granola rocker Rebecca Loebe will be wrapping up her Spring tour there on Saturday night. Hopefully the time on the road has produced new stories, new songs and maybe even a couple of bucks. It’s $8 in advance, $10 at the door and again, I wouldn’t tell you to go if I didn’t think she could overcome the obvious (including those basketball games…).
That’s another A-List and I wish I was a little bit taller, I wish I was a baller.
