Nobody can seem to talk about this San Diego foursome without answering the unasked question: “What did these guys used to be called?” Being the trendsetters that we are, we will do it too.
If it still matters, the band was formed under the name, “The Muslims.” They recorded a handful of singles and an EP under that moniker before sensibly recognizing that it may not be the best name for a band that is trying to write “simple, catchy, smart rock songs.” We agree.
The Soft Pack has now released its first full length, a self-titled album using the new name, on Kemado Records. With production assistance from Eli Janney (of Girls Against Boys), they have unquestionably captured those catchy tunes they were lookin’ for on this new record. In fact it was the iPod accompaniment to much of the weekend. We look forward to seeing them put it to the live test on March 25 at the Earl.
