Christmas Day is a day of happiness and wonder for many. I sincerely wish that everyone who reads this feels exactly that way. However, it would be selfishly naïve to forget that the holidays are a dark season for many. We can only guess that was the case for Vic Chesnutt who left us to play on a greater stage one year ago today.
This post is not only in memory of Vic but also as a reminder that his struggle was not unique. That “scrooge” at work or down the street might be suffering more than you know. Please consider supporting Athens-based Nuci’s Space, whose mission is to provide obstacle free treatment for musicians suffering from depression, or your local chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.
What follows is an audience recording of Vic Chesnutt live at the Earl on March 2, 2008. From the sound of the recording, the room wasn’t as full as it should have been but it captures Vic’s true sound and brilliant sense of humor. Tolerate the first 1:53 of the intro to hear his inimitable self-introduction and great segue into “Morally Challenged.”
Much thanks to the original taper. For more live shows by Vic and many other great Georgia artists check out Southern Shelter – also a supporter of Nuci’s Space.
Enjoy and please have a very Merry Christmas and a great day today.
