Athens’ Dead Confederate have released their new EP, Dirty Ammo, in a variation on the pay what you like format.
The EP consists of seven songs recorded live at the EARL in May 2009 – one of our favorite shows of the year. It includes two covers: “Smoking a Mirror” by Officer May and “Roman Candle” by Elliot Smith. The former of which we were totally unfamiliar with and thought was an unreleased original when we heard it in the spring. These two covers bookend the record which, if we are tracking things correctly, does contain one new tune – the second track, “Guns.” The other four songs favor their self-titled EP but that works for us because we like that record.
What’s interesting (and cool) about how they have chosen to release it is that you can get it for free if you’re willing to share your email which is always a fair trade in our book. However, you can also donate one American dollar to the Rebuild the Georgia Theatre fund and get a good quality 320 kbps download. For record lovers, there is the “standard” edition of the deal in which you receive a vinyl pressing of the record and the download for $21 and a buck will still go to the Georgia Theatre. Finally, fans and collectors can get the record, the download, and a t-shirt for $41 – yes, that extra dollar still goes to the Georgia Theatre fund.
If you made it to the EARL in the spring or just know how much you like this band, this is an easy choice. If you don’t know these guys, here’s your chance to sample their post-grunge sound. In either case, even if you never stepped foot in the Georgia Theatre you should recognize how cool it is a for a band on the rise to stay true to its roots and support its hometown music scene – certainly that’s worth a dollar. Oh yeah, click here to donate and download.
Finally, before we go let us mention that they will be back in town with their swirling guitars and thin crash cymbals at the EARL on January 8 (with Twin Tigers & Carnivores).
