SXSW kicks off as I type. I am still here at home in the ATL but far finer elements of Atlanta will be represented in Austin, Texas.
If you’re on your way to SXSW from points in Georgia or elsewhere, several must see Atlanta bands are headed to Austin. The best Atlanta based event will likely be ATL Yeah! Organized by Jeremiah of the Favorite Gentlemen crew, ATL Yeah! is a free event from Noon and 7pm on Friday at the Red Fez. The nine band line up will feature some of our favorite Atlanta bands – Oryx and Crake, Sealions, Death on Two Wheels, and Trances Arc. No matter where you’re coming from, you want to make a point to drop by this show.
The other big show you want to catch is ATL Gets Weird at Clive’s from Noon to 6pm on March 17th. Sealions, Little Tybee, and Back Pockets will be among our favorites in that crowd. That show is free too.
Look for more of Oryx and Crake on March 17th at the Paste Magazine Party at The Stage on Sixth at 2pm and an early evening show the same day at The Airport Bar, 5:15pm. They will be joined by special guest, the über-talented Richard Parsons on keys – an event that I am sincerely sorry that I will miss.
Sealions will also be part of the Go Big or Back to the ATL party on March 19. It’s on a roof! The event starts at Noon and will go until 2am. Again, it’s free – no badges required. Sealions will be joined by Ponderosa, Mermaids and many others.
In addition to the ATL Yeah! show, Death on Two Wheels will be playing a triple bill on March 17th: 1pm at Venue 222; 7:45pm at Lambert’s; and 10:45 at the world famous Stubb’s BBQ.
